Election 2008
By BetsyG
It’s 10:26 as I write this, and it’s looking good for Obama. But whoever wins, I have the same wish: that whoever is president does everything in his power to pull this country together, rather than continue to break it apart. I was listening to conservative hate-radio DJ Jay Severin today on WTKK in Boston and it is hard to feel optimistic when he refers to Obama and his people as “thugs” and suggests that they will be breaking doors down like Bolsheviks in Russia. You can’t have it both ways, denigrating Obama as a liberal, then suggesting he would use the very un-liberal tactic of infringing on people’s civil rights.
Best and brightest indeed.
For Obama, I hope that he is more centrist than left when it comes to the economy. I expect campaign plans and actual policy to differ greatly, and for Obama to alter his plans as needed to ensure he cannot be labeled a “tax-and-spend” liberal. I want to see him cut spending. I don’t want him to soak the rich, and I don’t want people who don’t pay taxes to get government rebates. I want the Republicans and conservatives to be eating their words, to take back all the socialist nonsense, and for his policies to result in a vital economy.
I want to see some progress on the health insurance. Finally. I want to see a plan to exit Iraq. I want our standing in the world to return to its pre-Bush state.
But more than anything, I want this country to be far less partisan, far less accusatory, less hateful.
What do you want? What are your hopes for the future? Once we move past the sound bites and slogans, what is your wish for this country?
I’m going to watch the concession speech now (Obama’s gone over… and then some). Excuse the less than lucid post.
Nice speech by McCain. Graceful.
